For the fifth year in a row, here’s my reflection on the year we’re leaving behind. Also check out 201220112010 and 2009.

December 16, 2013 at 1104PM-Besotted with my stunning 2014 planner from @paperelephantpress I have such talented friends 3My 2014 letterpress diary (YES!) by my clever friend Nykke of Paper Elephant Press

  1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
Oh gawwwd, SO many things. Used (and loved and converted to) MacOS, became a Michelle Bridges fangirl, meditated regularly, ate (and liked) bananas, became a proper plane spotter, drank (and liked) Diet Coke, joined a roller skating gym, starred in three internet videos, took on a business mentor, saw a real live aurora, learned to shoot manual
  2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
2013 was going to change me. And it did. I am so drastically different from this time last year that it’s almost hilarious. My mindset, focus, direction, goal setting, achievement, acceptance of fear, willingness to try in spite of failure…yeah. Rah has evolved, yo. It was so fkn hard you know, and I didn’t think I’d be able to get through the muck, but I totes did \o/
  3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My sister in law Bele had little Dash and Janie just had Jerome a couple of weeks ago <3
  4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope, and I don’t think I even attended/helped prepare any funerals this year – very very unusual
  5. What countries/states did you visit?
SO much travel this year! I went to Melbourne to see Anna (and Charliiiiie!), Hobart three times and Gold Coast for ProBlogger. Plus some road trips north and west of Syderney
  6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
    More internal peace
  7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
This is going to sound dinky, but he entirety of my 35th birthday long weekend. I felt thoroughly spoilt, loved, drunk and hungover
  8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
    An answer in three parts:
    1) finally (finalllllly) getting my heathy lifestyle mindset on. On like Donkey Kong. I dunno what it is about Michelle Bridges’ 12 Week Body Transformation being different to every other attempt, but my brain is finally in on the game. RELIEF. Pure relief
    2) realising, acknowledging and getting help for being bullied after a long, long time.  There is a long story to go with this, but it’s not fit for airing publicly. But suffice to say: I got through it
    3) getting brave and asking friends for help with Big Ideas. I’m so lucky to have friends like Leigh, Suger and Scarlet (and the rest!) who have been so generous with their time and expertise this year. MWAH!
  9. What was your biggest failure?
You know what? I can’t think of big enough failures worth harping on about. We all fail ourselves (or fail someone around us) on a daily basis. But that shiz is SO not worth hanging on to. Leave it behind and just move along
  10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major besides getting the worst case of gastro I’ve ever had…looking back, I really should have gone to hospital. Wally
  11. What was the best thing you bought?
    R2D200!
  12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My darling husband, who tolerates a recovering moody wife without getting cranky at me. The man is a saint for putting up with me
  13. Whose behaviour was appalling?
Quentin Bryce for not doing what I asked of her and still swearing in Tony Abbott as PM. MRS BRYCE, I ASKED YOU NICELY AND OFFERED TO MAKE YOU MY FAMOUS CUPCAKES
  14. Where did most of your money go?
    Mortgage and travel to Tasmania
  15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting tickets to see Bruno Mars in February 2014. Bring it on, Hooligans!
  16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
Katy Perry’s Roar. Every line of that damned song
  17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
    a)  happier  or sadder? happier
    b) thinner or  fatter? thinner! \m/
    c) richer or poorer?  so much richer on so many levels
  18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Saying yes and working it out later
  19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
    Avoiding difficult decisions
  20. How did you spend Christmas?
The first ever Garlo (aka me, Dan, Jarod and Liz… long story) Christmas in Hobart! Maccas hotcakes for breakfast, Christmas ham for lunch, roast chicken for dinners and dessert at Sweet Hut. It was amazing to spend it with mah beloveds, despite missing our families like crazy
  21. What was your favourite TV program?
My fave new show of the year is Brooklyn Nine Nine. Funny shiz
  22. Did you make a friend with anyone that you didn’t know this time last year?
T! It’s amazing the ppl you meet when your flight gets cancelled
  23. What was the best book you read?
I have a little handmade book on my bedside table called “The Rahest of all Rah’s” that was made for me during one of my (many) rough patches this year. I read it whenever I need a boost and it works wonders every single time.
  24. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I don’t think there was anything overly significant for me this year, except I remembered just how good singing is for my soul, esp singing power balads a-la Tina Arena and Barbara Streisand
  25. What did you want and get?
    An improved brain
  26. What did you want and not get?
You know what? I really don’t know. Right now I feel like my life is full of all the things I want. Or, if it’s not exactly what I want, it’s as damn close as I’m gonna get. I am the luckiest
  27. What was your favourite film of this year?
WHITE HOUSE DOWN. Hands down. Love that movie so damn hard.
HOW THE HELL CAN YOU LOSE A ROCKET LAUNCHER?! lolz
  28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
#rah35 was epic in a way that was only possible because it involved Team Garlo: Dan, Liz and Jarod. Those three pulled out all the stops for me and I am so so lucky to have all three of them in my life
  29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
    Meeting Barack Obama :)
  30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
    More stripe-y
  31. What kept you sane?
    Singing, singing and more singing
  32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Jamie Foxx as Barack Obama in White House Down
  33. What political issue stirred you the most?
TONY ABBOTT’S STANCE ON “ILLEGAL” BOAT PEOPLE, TONY IT’S NOT ACTUALLY ILLEGAL YOU WALLY
  34. Who did you miss?
The friends and family I haven’t been very good at keeping in touch with this year. I’ve been pretty selfish with keeping to myself while i worked through my brain farts this year
  35. Who was the best new person you met?
    Me :D
  36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013
“Be who you are and say what you feel because
    those who mind don’t matter
and those who matter don’t mind.” (not actually a Dr Seuss quote)
  37. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year
I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
    I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up
    Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
    Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero
    — Katy Perry’s Eye of the Tiger (this cover’s cool)
