I’ve been hanging out to try Bill Granger’s meat pie recipe since it’s been getting a mention on 702 Drive on a daily basis for the last 2 months.
Yes; I listen to AM radio. Yes; I am okay with this.
For reasons I can’t work out, today turned out to be the day. Bought the chuck steak, some new oval Maxwell & Williams pie dishes and the fresh herbs for the recipe.
The recipe is much easier to read here; the original source uses framesets or something equally horrid and it doesn’t render properly in Firefox.
And here’s how it turned out:
And it tasted pretty damn good, too!
This recipe is meant to serve 6, and the new pie dishes I bought were too big, hence the emergency use of our beloved square Maxwell & Williams bowls for single-serves. We didn’t have enough to fill every dish to the top, so they’re not as “fullsome” as I would have liked. But they still tasted damn good!
Next time I’ll use blade steak instead of chuck (cutting all the fat off the meat was enough to turn me vego) and maybe not use as much canned tomato. It doesn’t have that real gravy taste that I was expecting, but suspect the reduced tomato might help with that.
Tonight we served it with mashed potato, at the request of poor Dan, who’s been attacked by the flu bug. It worked out quite well because we used the mash to mop up the excess pie juice.
Overall, for a meal that I’ve never cooked before – and considering I’m never in charge of much more than cupcakes, egg sandwiches and washing up in our kitchen – this recipe gets 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up from me! Nom nom nom.
